Recessed Lighting

Professional recessed lighting installation for new construction and retrofit projects. Clean, modern illumination that adds value and functionality to any room.

Recessed Lighting Installation in New Jersey

Recessed lighting—also called can lights or downlights—delivers clean, unobtrusive illumination that works in nearly every room. Whether you're updating a kitchen, finishing a basement, or adding task lighting to a home office, properly installed recessed fixtures provide focused light exactly where you need it.

We handle both new construction installs and retrofit projects in existing ceilings. Every installation is done to NEC code with the correct IC-rated or airtight housings for insulated spaces, proper junction box connections, and appropriate circuit loading.

New Construction vs. Retrofit

New construction recessed lights install before drywall goes up. We mount the housings directly to joists, run all wiring through open framing, and coordinate with your builder's schedule.

Retrofit (remodel) cans clip into finished ceilings through a hole cut with a hole saw. We fish wiring through existing walls and attics, patch any access points, and match your ceiling finish. Retrofit projects take more labor but avoid tearing out drywall.

Placement and Spacing

Recessed lights work best when spaced intentionally. General ambient lighting typically uses 4- to 6-inch cans on 4- to 6-foot centers. Task lighting over counters or desks sits closer together. Accent lighting highlights artwork or architectural features.

We'll walk the space with you, mark proposed locations, and explain what each fixture will illuminate before we drill. Proper placement prevents dark spots and glare.

Dimming and Smart Controls

Most recessed LED fixtures dim smoothly when paired with a compatible dimmer switch. We install dimmers rated for LED loads—standard incandescent dimmers cause flicker and early failure.

Smart dimmers and app-controlled fixtures integrate with Alexa, Google Home, or dedicated lighting systems. We wire and configure these controls so they work reliably from day one.

Energy Efficiency

LED recessed lights use a fraction of the energy that older halogen or incandescent cans consumed. A 10-watt LED produces the same light as a 65-watt incandescent, cutting energy costs and eliminating the heat buildup that shortens bulb life and stresses insulation.

We install ENERGY STAR–rated fixtures when available and ensure all penetrations in insulated ceilings use IC-rated, airtight housings to maintain your home's thermal envelope.

Permits and Inspections

Most recessed lighting projects require an electrical permit in New Jersey. We pull permits, schedule inspections, and provide all documentation for your records. Work is done to the 2020 NEC as adopted by New Jersey.

How it works

01

Site Visit and Layout

We walk the space, discuss your lighting goals, and mark proposed fixture locations. You'll see exactly where each light will go before we start.

02

Permit and Material Prep

We pull the electrical permit, order the correct housings and trims, and schedule the work to fit your timeline.

03

Installation

We cut openings, mount housings, run wiring to code, install switches or dimmers, and connect all fixtures. Retrofit jobs include patching any access holes.

04

Inspection and Cleanup

We schedule the municipal inspection, address any notes, and leave the site clean with all documentation for your records.

Common questions

Can you add recessed lights to an existing ceiling without major damage?+

Yes. Retrofit recessed housings clip into a hole cut with a hole saw. We fish wiring through the attic or wall cavities and patch any small access points. Most retrofit projects cause minimal disruption to finished spaces.

How many recessed lights do I need in a room?+

It depends on the room size, ceiling height, and purpose. A general rule is one fixture per 25 to 30 square feet for ambient lighting, spaced 4 to 6 feet apart. Task areas need closer spacing. We'll design a layout during the site visit.

Do recessed lights work with dimmer switches?+

Most LED recessed fixtures dim smoothly when paired with an LED-compatible dimmer. We install the correct dimmer for your fixtures to prevent flicker and ensure full range dimming.
